The Door Closed
The door closed behind Jane leaving her outside feeling vulnerable and exposed. It was cheap, a thin wood that would yield quickly to an axe or a sledgehammer, but, of course, standing there in her new blue suit and white blouse, she was more a solitary woman than a beast with massive strength and will who could break down anything between her and destiny.
She took this job partly just to earn some money since she and Michael had been living on hot dogs and rice and staying in a trailer behind her parent's house ever since he lost his job. But she had also wanted to break through her shyness and depression into a new life as an exciting, dynamic leader that everyone would listen to. The suit was a necessary component of this new persona. When she had found it at Walmart marked down 15%, she knew it was just the thing she needed, no matter that it wasn't really in their budget. Dressed for success, she felt completely ready to take on the world in a direct and forceful way until she stood before her first open door and realized that not everyone was on board with her plan of self reconstruction.
The man had laughed when she said she was collecting signatures for her candidate who was handsome and charismatic and someone she would have followed anywhere. She truly thought that everyone else would feel the same. The man at the door, unconvinced, rudely interrupted her spiel with, "You can't think I'd vote for that asshole!" Her firm resolve disappeared. A few more insults, then the door was shut, and her new life faded away before her like an old photograph she could just dimly see.
